The votes from Dixville Notch notwithstanding, nobody should be surprised by the election results in New Hampshire. Although Talleyrand’s crystal ball still says that the health of either or both of the leading presidential candidates may give out before November, making the election a providential free-for-all, for now it appears that this particular Greek tragedy will run its course.

And why not? Politico newspaper ran an interesting story the other day about the typical Republican voter. It’s remarkable that some people are still misinformed about this person. The man in this story lives in house worth nearly a million dollars, has a full military pension, and a full-time job in retirement. Yet he feels mistreated.

These are voters who really feel they have little or nothing to lose. Ask people around the world to describe the typical American and many will say ‘greedy’. Just look at the rats busy casting their lines. In that respect Donald Trump’s voters are the same Americans who have elected the more (or most) venal candidate in every US presidential election since 1988. It’s why the ‘Establishment’ hate Mr Trump as much as they do. He says out loud what they all know about themselves, and have known for a very long time.

That’s why he’s so consistently unpopular – as well as popular.

The matter now is that they have run out of bread and circuses, and his is the only show in town. What comes next may well surprise everyone.
